The difference between Halogen, HMI and LED

Go back

In various stage fixtures there is always a light source, a lamp of some kind. Traditionally, this lamp was made with a filament. Here we make a brief review of the different techniques to create light.

INCANDESCENT LIGHT BULB:

This is the oldest form of light and has its roots in Thomas Edison technology. In a glass container filled with an inert gas, usually argon, a electric current is allowed to to flow through a filement, usually made by Wolfram (also called Tungsten, hence the name Tungsten light). This will then start to glow. When the power is high enough, it will shine brightly. Since the filament is not fast enough nor dependent on the polarity of the alternating current, and neither filament nor the inert gas has time to cool down between peaks in the alternating current. However, it will neither be able to reach full brightness at the peaks, so the brightness will be averaged. Instead, the heat will build up why a incandescent light bulb traditionally only emitts about 5% light while 95% is given off in the form of heat.

Benefits
* Provides an even light whithout flicker
* Is simple dim the light intensity since it's directly proportional to the current

Disadvantages
* Very high power consumption compared to the brightness
* Very high heat output compared to the brightness
* Poor energy exhange
* The filament is evaporated during the entire burn time, which both provide a relatively short life span (typically only 50-100 hours depending on handling) and the filament atoms sets on the inside of the glass container which continuously reduces luminous efficancy and color spectrum.

HALOGEN LAMP:

The halogen lamp is a further development of the incandecent light bulb where argon has been replaced with a halogen gases, like bromine or iodine. The filament has also been made thinner and it has also a increased burning temperature. With these changes, the atoms that is evaporate from the filament, is then returned the the filament through a cycle. This produces several benefits, like increased service life by 2-4 times and the Halogen lamp keep both the light output and color temperature constant throughout the lifetime of the halogen lamp.

Benefits
* Produces even light, no flicker
* Easy to dim
* Constant light output and color temperature throughout the lifetime of the halogen

Disadvantages
* High power consumption compared to the brightness
* High heat output compared to the brightness
* High temperature of the filament makes it sensitive to mechanical impact
* By the high temperature, the halogen lamp requiring extra care in installation and use in order not to cause thermal damage to materials or people

HMI LAMP:

Unlike the other lights, the HMI lamp has no filament. Instead, it is a gas mixture of mercury vapor and metal halides that between two tungsten electrodes, create an arc.
In this arc, both the mercury vapor and metal halids create a plasma that is emitting the light. This increases luminous efficiency by nearly four times compared with the best halogen lamps.
To ignite the arc and maintain the plasma, a external ballast is needed that transforms the mains voltage to the required ignition voltage. There are two types of ballast, magnetic and electronic.

Dimming of the HMI lamp can only be done in two ways. Either, if a magnetic ballast is used, through the use of a aperture which is by physical means limit the light from the lamp, or by use of a electronic ballast which dims the light with PWM technology (see the factual text: What is PWM-control for more information).
HMI is an abbreviation for Hydrargyrum (which is Latin for mercury) Medium-arc Iodide and is actually an Osram-invention that was developed in the 1960s at the request of German television but has become synonymous with this type of lamps.

Benefits
* Very high light output
* Very high color temperature

Disadvantages
* Requires external ballast for arc ignition (up to 70,000 volts)
* Magnetic ballast that is cheap but big and clumsy and inappropriate within television since it generates a flickering light. A magnetic ballast can not be dimmed
* The electronic ballast can dim and be make flicker free but is in return much more expensive.
* Dimming is possible only to about 50% and the color temperature increases in conjunction with dimming, thus creating a bluer light.
* The ignition of the powerful HMI lights, it is advisable to take extreme caution, particularly if they are more than 50% of the specified usabel time or have been mechanically abused since the HMI lamps can be made to explode with great force in these cases.
* An HMI light that is dropped when it is lit, can cause great harm when the super hot quartz glass often exploded. In addition, it released hot mercury vapor, which in itself is extremely environmentally harmful and unhealthy.

LED LAMP:

Unlike all other lights the LED do not "burn" at all. Instead, it uses different semiconductor materials physics process with "holes" and "electrons". Simply put, when a voltage is applied to an LED, electrons are allowed to recombine with the so-called. "electron holes" inside the semiconductor material, releasing energy in the form of photons (light particles). The effect is called electroluminescence and the color generated is determined by the energy gap. The effect of electroluminescence was discovered in 1907 but not until 1962 did Nick Holonyak Jr.., who then worked at General Electric Company, managed to create the first practical LED in red color. Holonyak is usually referred to as The Fader of LED.
Up until 1968, the LEDs are very expensive to produce and cost about $200 USD/ each. But through the development of production technology, the price in 1970 falls to below 5 cent.
The first blue LED came 1971. In the late 1990s and 2000s, the technology is exploding and it is now possible to manufacture LED chips with up to 5W power. For higher power several LED chip are combining. Eg we can now offer up to 300W LED modules which consists of 100 pieces 3W chip.
The colors depends on the energy gap in the LED substrate but to manufacture white LEDs have so far been imposible since white light is composed of all colors, while an LED in reality is monochrome (ie single color).
To produce white LEDs it is for the moment almost exclusively made with a technique in which a blue or UV LED is coated with a layer of phosphor. Thus "slowing down" the photons to a whitish color. A little cheating but fully functional. This technology also allows for optional color temperature to be obtained on the white color because it is controlled by the phosphorus compound. A color temperature of 3300K (very warm white) to 6000K (iced white) is possible.
To otherwise produce white light from the LED requires the mix of the three primary colors red, green and blue. Here is the balance very difficult and such light is often considered as "cold" since the blue LED is often a bit dominant.
For best effect, the LED light requires special arrangements in the drive circutry as they have the same "problems" as the HMI (flickering to the driving voltage alternating current). If this is not taken into account in the creation of stage lighting, these will create a flickering light in the TV cameras. Moreover, the practical field of dimming is limited since the principal behind LED's is based on the electron jumps. If the energy is too low, there will be no jumps. For example, a 1W LED with a drive current of 350mA, will not lit when the drive current is below approximately 50mA. This makes it the practical field of dimming only between about 20% to 100%, not 0% to 100% as in a incandecent light bulb. To get around this problem, a technique called PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is used. See our facutal text on PWM-control: What is PWM-control.

Benefits
* Pure light without UV-artifacts
* Significantly better efficancy than traditional incandescent and halogen light bulbs
* Very low heat
* Much lower power consumption than incandescent, halogen and HMI
* Providing excellent dimming by PWM control
* Very long lifespan up to 100,000 hours
* Contains no toxic substances, making them very environmentally friendly
* Insensitive to shock
* Slow failure, unlike other light sources it will "die" slow
* No risk of explosion

Disadvantages
* Changes the color temperature over time
* Changing the light output and color temperature in relation to temperature
* Drive-sensitive, which requires very precise control of both voltage and current in order not to damage
* Even if the price has drop dramatically, however, LED considerably more expensive, which in itself is offset by their extremely long life

Invest or Start a Company in Southwest of China
China isn't only one of the largest producers of product in the world but is also becoming a real economic Super Power. Several economist believe that China will surpass USA as the economic Super Power within 10 years.

But China doesn't only produce but is also one of the worlds largest consumers of quality products. The Chinese government have spent billions of USD to lift the country from poverty to creating a consuming middle class and many high income earners.
In the communist China you are very pragmatic.
It is easier to remain in power if you give the masses "bread and entertainment". In this case, the middle class ability to spend money due to a multiplied increase in income.

Since Acquris have many years experience of trading with China and also a part owner that is Chinese with 20 years experience in helping and handling companies to start in China, we can offer something unique.

Regardless if you want to transfer your production to south of China or if you want to export your products or even set up a company in China, we can assist you with all administration, all necessary documents, give you tip and tricks of "How to", assist in finding office/production space and much, much more. With other words, we can give you everything from a solid understand for decision making to make sure you don't end up in any judicial problems or get tricked/fooled by scammers.

HOT NEW Updated Porduct range of Sport and Action Cameras
HOT NEW Updated Porduct range of Sport and Action Cameras

- !!! - UPDATED - !!! - HOT - !!! - NEW - !!! - HOT - !!! - UPDATED - !!! -

We have now updated our product line of Sport- and Action cameras.

In direct competition with leading brands like GoPro, we dare to stick out our head and claim that we are not only much cheaper but also both better, have higher quality and also include a nearly complete set of accessories for lower price.

This means that you don't need to afterwards hunt for accessories to be able to use the camera were you want.
We have made an adapter to allow some of the models to use GCoPro's mounts if one wants.

As we said before, we have two types of cameras, one type we call SportCam's that looks like GoPro with it's a little more boxy design and foremost, exactly like GoPro lacks IP-protection in itself. For this, it needs the included waterproof casing which thereby makes the camera capable to handle a little more demanding environment.
The other version´, we have named ActionCam since it from the start with its "all-in-one" design. They are completely waterproof and can be used while diving "out of the box" without any accessories. They are also much lighter and thereby suitable for example helmet mount. In addition does there round tubular shape also decrease the risk of getting snagged in something as an example.

What more differ our SportCam and ActionCam?

Common for all our SportCam and ActionCam is that they record video in true full HD, i.e. 1920 x 1080p.
All support 30 frames per second however some also support 1920 x 1080p and 60FPS and in some cases, and some also support 1280 x 720p in 120 Frames / Second.
As before are all our ActionCam water resistant to at least 10 meters depth and in some cases down to 30 meters depth.

Due to the larger encapsulation in our SportCam, there is on the other hand room for functions like Wi-Fi, wireless remote control (RF and in some cases also with built-in monitor to view the camera image live in the remote) and G-sensor and so on. In one of our upcoming models, also a included GPS for integrating the GPS data with the video.

Which you should you choose, SportCam or ActionCam?

Well, that depends primarily on the how you intend to use it.
If you are an adrenaline-junkie who would throw yourselves out of cliffs, are Kayaking in rushing rivers, like skydiving or Bungee jumping etc., on a regularly basis, we would suggest our ActionCam to be appropriate since it take up little space, is very light and "out of the way".
Are you on the other hand, a person who needs functions like Wifi, remote control and that bikes, drive cross-bike/motor bike, motor sports or like to dive down to around 30-60 meters, it is probably our SportCam you want.
What you choose is, in other words up to you but considering the price, you can even afford two or three since they cost about half of what for example a fully equipped Hero3 costs.
Click on the picture and look at which model suits you best.
Or why not give one as a Christmas gift. We guarantee that it will be an appreciated gift, no matter which model you choose.

Acquris presents a world unique music light
Acquris presents a world unique music light

Unlike all other music lights on the market, whether they use LED or standard bulbs, they are based on a very rudimentary design. Power source and lamp, that's it!
Music lights with light bulbs have had a few advantages but many disadvantages. Leaving aside the obvious disadvantages of broken lamps and the requirement of connection to the power grip, the main advantage is that they can be dimmed to a low level if necessary.

The LED-based lamps have all the benefits that the light bulbs had as disadvantages, however they have a rather huge disadvantage. Dimming is very rudimentary, or truth be told, does not really exist. Being able to turn off a number LED's is really not dimming.

After our first try with ACQ-Music Light-DUO, we have taken most of the customers and professional musicians' wishes and developed a totally new and unique product on the world market. Acquris completely new and revolutionary music light, ACQ-MusicLight9-DIM.

Therefore, we are proud to present a music light with everyone (and some more) of the advantages of an LED-based music light had and combined it with the greatest advantage a light bulb type music light, true dimming.

Being able to use a music light with both mains and battery is also something that is common with LED-based music lights. However, we have decided to go a step further and has assembled a large rechargeable Li-Ion battery that allows up to 30 hours of continuous operation between charges. That should suffice for Wagner's ring concert. Moreover, we have chosen to let the charger function as both a charger AND and a AC adapter providing extra flexibility. For further flexibility, we have also equipped the charging cable with a standard USB connector, allowing the light to be charge just as easy from the supplied charger as from any computer. Practical and as said before, flexible.

We have also chosen to allow the lights lamp head to be as wide as an A4 page and has fitted quality lenses that spread the light very evenly, without glare or hot spots, up to 4 music sheets in width.

Despite the advanced dimming function, we have been eager to make the operations easy. A single button is all you need to keep track of.
One press, and ACQ-MusicLight9-DIM lights up maximum, press it again and the brightness is halved (not by turning off half of LED's that is common among other products, but by just halving the brightness of ALL LED's. A further press, and the brightness is halved once more. An additional press and it is halved once more. In this mode, the music light can be used even if the stage and orchestra pit should be dark, still providing enough light to read the music. This allows for new possibilities in the performances. One last press and ACQ-MusicLight9-DIM is switched off. Simple and easy to understand.

We have also made sure that the "gap" is extra wide and is also coated with an anti-slip rubber which allows the lights to fit snugly on virtually all music stands or binders.
In addition, the spring is extra strong so it wont come off by itself.

Thanks to the unique dimming function, the wide illumination angle and the strong clip, our ACQ-MusicLight9-DIM functions excellent as a book lamp without disturbing the bed partner.

Our LEDs are manufactured by Taiwanese Edison that ensures nearly 100,000 hours of operating time without failure. This makes our ACQ-MusicLight9-DIM a genuine "perpetual devices', when not even the battery needs replacing.
